The Registry keeps vital information ready in case a person wanders from home or a long-term care facility. It is available to anyone with memory loss or cognitive impairment.
There is a one-time registration cost of $35 which includes an identification bracelet and registration at the offices of Alzheimer Society of Peel, Alzheimer Canada, and the R.C.M.P.
Alzheimer Society of Canada Announces Changes to
Safely HomeTM - Alzheimer Wandering Registry
Two-year grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to enhance program
The Alzheimer Society's Safely HomeTM program will be getting a boost
thanks to funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. New educational
resources, a training video for police, and search and rescue
guidelines are being created over the next two years. These
initiatives, along with work with long-term care facilities to increase
registration in the program, will better serve people with Alzheimer's
disease and their families.
Safely HomeTM - Alzheimer Wandering Registry is a nationwide program
designed to help find a person with Alzheimer's disease who is lost and
assist in a safe return home. Developed by the Alzheimer Society of
Canada in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the
registry stores vital information confidentially on a police database.
The information can be accessed by police anywhere in Canada and the
United States.
Here's how it works. When a loved one goes missing -- the caregiver
calls the local police. Accessing the computer database, information
about them is matched using personal information. A match is made when
the police are able to use the identification number on the identity
bracelet worn by the person with Alzheimer's disease to search the
database.
There are now two ways to register:
A new website has been created at www.safelyhome.ca that allows applicants to register online for Safely Home by clicking "Register Now". Online registrations may be paid for by credit card and cheque. Registrations paid for by credit card are immediately activated and added to the database. Those paid for by cheque will be held in a pending file until ASC recieves the applicant's cheque. Once registered, registrants will be given a password to access their record in the database to make future updates. Although it is not expected that many of our clients will register online, we wanted to make you aware that this option is now available.
If you prefer, you can download a copy of the Safely Home - Alzheimer Wandering Registry form and bring it into our office where it will be processed directly by our Safely Home Registry Coordinator.
