Education Programs Enhancing Care

As part of our commitment to public awareness around Alzheimer's disease and related dementias the Alzheimer Society of Peel offers public, family and caregiver group educational presentations with the Alzheimer Society of Peel Education Coordinator.

Educational presentations are available to groups on such topics as:

- Warning Signs of Alzheimer Disease and How to Get a Diagnosis
- Community Services Available
- Communication Strategies in Dementia Care


Presentations can be given to work places over a lunch hour; or community groups in the evenings.  Topics are varied, according to the needs of the group.

As an example, groups can include workplaces, seniors centres, churches, service clubs, fitness groups and high schools.

A U-First! Training Session is Being Offered In Your Area for Informal Management Staff

Session Details:

What is U-First!?
            U-First! = Understanding – Flagging, Interaction, Reflection, Support, Team.

U-First! is a method of shared problem-solving and care planning that focuses on the centrality of the person     and the importance of various factors in well-being, self-determination, and quality of life.

The goal of U-First! is to develop a common knowledge base, a common language, common values, and  a        common approach to providing care for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.

Who Should Attend U-First! This Training Session?
Staff and volunteers in community organizations who work with persons with dementia, families, volunteers and other informal caregivers.

Attendees may include:

  • Educators
  • Family Support Workers
  • Volunteer Co-ordinators
  • Friendly Visiting Co-ordinators


What You Will Learn:
Through this interactive session you will gain an understanding of the U-First! concepts including the use of the practical tool and how to use U-First! to support persons with dementia and their informal caregivers.

You will also learn:

  • To promote dialogue between the target group and others on the care team.
  • To introduce the target group to a common vision, language and approach to care for people living with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder
  • To incorporate the U-First! language and concepts and the practical tool into day-to-day practice.
  • To integrate U-First! into existing training and education opportunities where appropriate.
  • To work with others in creating a supportive environment for sustainability of the common vision, language and approach of U-First!

 

There is NO FEE, but participants are asked to contact their local Alzheimer Society to pre-register.
